Allergy Testing near Canton, MS

Before you can figure out how to control your allergies, you have to know what triggers them. And, just because you know one of your allergy triggers doesn’t mean there aren’t more things you need to watch out for!

To help you identify exactly what causes you to have an allergic reaction, and how severe your allergic reaction to each substance is, MSAAC offers a variety of asthma testing methods.

Our team of skilled allergy doctors can guide you through testing on your allergies, including:

Skin Testing

With a skin test, the surface of your skin (usually your back or arm) is pricked and a small amount of an allergen is introduced.

After 15 minutes, the allergist checks your skin for signs of a reaction to each substance, including:

  • Welts

  • Redness

  • Swelling

We offer two types of skin testing: prick testing and intradermal testing.

With prick testing, your skin is pricked with a small plastic device that has been dipped into a small amount of a given allergen. With intradermal testing, your skin is injected with small amounts of an allergen.

Both methods of skin testing hope to produce signs of Immunoglobulin E, the antibodies that are produced by the immune system during a reaction.

All skin testing is done in our office under the careful watch of our knowledgeable team.

Patch Testing

In some cases, an allergic reaction will not crop up immediately after exposure. Instead, symptoms of these allergies appear over the course of hours or days instead of minutes.

For these allergens, patch testing is recommended. With patch testing, the allergens are applied to patches that are then placed on your back. These patches are left on your skin for 48 to 72 hours and are removed during a return visit to the allergist to check your reactions.

Some allergens that are tested using patch testing include:

  • Medications

  • Latex

  • Metals

  • Fragrances

  • Hair dyes

  • Resins

  • Preservatives

If you suspect you are allergic to something and want to undergo either skin or patch testing, contact one of our five locations for an appointment!
