What is Sublingual Immunotherapy & How does it Work?

Sublingual Immunotherapy Tablets Treatment

If you suffer from allergic rhinitis, also known as hay fever, you may have heard about the use of sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) for treatment.

Let’s explore a little more about what SLIT treatment is, and how it works:

What Is Sublingual Immunotherapy (SLIT)?

Sublingual immunotherapy is a treatment for allergic rhinitis that is administered in tablet format.

Medication to treat the allergies that would, in other treatment methods, be administered via allergy shot, is packed into either a liquid or tablet form. This medication is typically taken on a daily basis, but can also be administered as-needed when symptoms get bad.

Most clinical trials and surveys have found that SLIT is relatively safe and effective for rhinitis (stuffy, runny nose) and asthma caused by allergies to dust mites, grass, ragweed, cat dander, and tree pollens. It also may be effective in treating the itchy, red eyes caused by pollen during hay fever season, and may also be effective for children with mild eczema.

SLIT therapy is currently being studied to determine if it holds potential in treating food allergies.

How Does SLIT Work?

The medications used in SLIT treatment are administered in either a liquid or tablet format and taken under the tongue.

Most SLIT treatment is administered at least three days per week, but can be used daily for severe allergies or when the allergy season is particularly bad. It is recommended to continue SLIT treatment for three to five years in order to develop a lasting immunity to the allergens.

For grass and ragweed allergies, many doctors recommend SLIT treatment before and during the allergy season. For allergies to dust mites, you may be directed to continue treatment year-round.
